EMDR Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a therapeutic approach that can help people process experiences that continue to affect them in the present. When we experience something frightening, overwhelming or distressing, our brain does not always process the experience fully. Memories can remain connected to the emotions, physical sensations and beliefs that were present at the time, meaning that although the event may have happened some time ago, it can still feel very present or continue to influence how we respond to situations now.

EMDR helps the brain to reprocess these experiences so that they become less distressing and feel more like something that happened in the past. It is not about forgetting what happened or removing the memory, but about changing the way the experience is held so that it no longer has the same emotional impact. EMDR is often associated with trauma and PTSD, but it can also be helpful with difficulties such as anxiety, phobias, distressing memories, low self worth and experiences that continue to affect the way you see yourself or respond to the world around you.

EMDR Within a Wider Therapeutic Relationship

As an integrative psychotherapist, I use EMDR within a wider therapeutic relationship rather than simply applying the technique in isolation. Taking time to understand your individual circumstances is an important part of the process, as is developing a sense of safety and ensuring that you feel sufficiently prepared before any trauma processing begins. We will work collaboratively and at a pace that feels manageable for you, with you remaining in control of what you share and how we work together.

What Can We Work With?

For some people, there may be a particular event or experience that they want to work through, while for others their difficulties may have developed gradually through a number of experiences over time. There is no need to know exactly what has happened or whether EMDR is the right approach before you begin. We can start by understanding what is bringing you to therapy and explore together what might be most helpful.
